Churches

The Saint Ludmila Church
The Saint Ludmila Church - Namesti Miru
The Saint Ludmila Church is a Neo-Gothic church built in the period from 1888 to 1893. It dominates the Namesti Miru Square. Its interior and exterior were decorated by many famous artists of that time, including sculptor Josef Vaclav Myslbek, author of the statue of St Wenceslas on Wenceslas Square.

Emauzy
Emauzy - Vysehradska 49/320
Emauzy Monastery with the Church of Our Lady and Slavic Patron Saints was founded by Charles IV in 1347 for Slavonic Benedictines. It was the only Slavonic monastery in the west Christianity of the Charles's empire, centre of scholarship and arts. Such personalities as Jan Hus, Jerome of Prague… were among the students.
On February 14th 1945, during an American air-raid in Prague, the Church was destroyed. Later on, in 1967, a modern structure by the project of architect F. M. Cerny was realized – an asymmetric 32 m high shell structure with a 40 cm thick construction of white concrete.

Bethlehem Chapel
Bethlehem Chapel - Betlemske Namesti
The original chapel in this site was built in 1391 and held over 3,000 people. It was here than Jan Hus, who was executed in Old Town Square preached in his native Czech language against the rules of the catholic church which wanted latin.
In 1786 the original chapel was pulled down.
The chapel is open daily.

St Galls
St Galls - Haveska Ulice
St Galls is a really old church but having had some rebuilding in the 17th and 18th century. It became a carmelite monastery in 1627 until Jozef II abolished them. Jan Hus also preached here.

Church of St Ignatius
Church of St Ignatius - Jecna and Resslova
The church of Saint Ignatius stands on the corner across from Charles Square (Karlovo Namesti). It was built in 1600's for the Jesuit priests. It has a very ornate interior.

Bethleham Chapel
Bethleham Chapel - Betlemski Namesti
In the 1920's remains of the chapel were discovered and between 1948 - 1952 the chape; was rebuilt using most of the original chapel. It was painstaking reproduced using drawings that existed. On the walls you can see some of the original drawings and as you can see in the photograph there is a well which predates the chapel. Its a quite simple but lovely place to visit.
If you are visiting in the winter is also lovely and warm :-)
Literature is given to you by the lady where you pay on entering in your chosen language, describing the chapel.

Vratislao
Tomb of the Count Vratislao
Inside the church of St. James is possible to see the grave of the count Vratislao of Mitrovice, performed by the sculptor Ferdinand Brokof on project of Johann Bernhard Fisher von Erlach. The legend say that the count has been buried alive: its dead body was found sat in the sepulchre.
To the right of the entrance you can see the mummified arm of a thief that had tried to steal the jewels of the lady on the greatest altar. The virgin held back him so people amputated the arm.
Above the entrance it is possible to see the beautiful organ.
